Introduction
A solid foundation in mathematics is critical for empowering the next generation of innovators and pioneers. A thorough comprehension of mathematical concepts and skills is a vital requirement for those seeking a mathematics degree. Students enrolled in the program will learn how mathematics and scientific principles apply to real-world problems, whereby conceptual understanding is paramount and formulas manipulation is secondary.
Students majoring in mathematics will also explore computer science, calculus, physics, and English for the final 12 credits. Those with a background in math and science can expect to find employment in business, industry, government, fields of research, higher education, private industry, laboratories, and more. Recent surveys show those with math degrees have a strong probability of finding career success in a number of high-paying fields.
Any student wishing to pursue a degree in Physics should enroll in a Mathematics degree while attending NCC.
NCC students have transferred to: Lehigh University, Penn State University, Lafayette College, Kutztown University, Edinboro University, Moravian College, East Stroudsburg University, Rutgers University
Admissions
Curriculum
In our program, you will study a combination of common core courses designed for all math or science majors who are specializing in math.
Northampton has a number of special partnerships with four-year institutions. Our admission and transfer agreements allow for a smooth transfer to DeSales University, Cedar Crest College, Centenary College, Moravian College, Muhlenberg College, Lincoln, or Cheyney Universities.
Requirements
While this program has no special admission requirements, almost all of the math courses in the Pathways degree program require a background in Trigonometry and/or Precalculus. If you are lacking a background in these areas, you should acquire this mathematical foundation during the summer session before your first semester, or during your first semester or be aware that this associate's degree will take longer than the four semesters to complete.
First Semester
- COLS101College Success
- MATH150Introductory Statistics
- CMTH102Introduction to Communication
- ENGL101English I
- MATH180Calculus I
Second Semester
- ENGL151LEnglish II

- Elective
One course should be designated as Diversity and Global Awareness (D).
One General Education Elective (AH, SIT, SSHB) must be taken in a Writing Intensive (WI) section. The program-related writing intensive competency is satisfied by completion of both combinations of PHYS215 and PHYS225.
All electives must be chosen from the list of courses that are applicable to AA and AS degrees.
Program Outcome
Graduates of the program will:
- Demonstrate proficiency in conceptualization and analysis of problems.
- Demonstrate both conceptual and quantitative ability for problem-solving.
- Work independently and also collaboratively.
- Use technology to solve problems.
- Use mathematics to solve problems and make decisions.
- Succeed in a Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering program at a four-year institution.

Career Opportunities
Northampton's program prepares graduates for immediate employment as laboratory aides or technicians, scientific assistants, or in technical sales. Graduates of the two-year program, however, are heavily influenced to continue their studies by transferring to a four-year program. Four-year graduates who have transferred to one of NCC's partner institutions have earned degrees in fields as diverse as chemical or geological engineering, mathematics, and oceanography. Many will also find successful careers in secondary mathematics education.
Mathematicians work in the federal government and in private science and engineering research. They work in teams with engineers, scientists, and other professionals.
