Introduction
Want to retrain for a career as a Legal Executive, Solicitor, or Barrister?
An Access to Law course means you can aim for a graduate-entry career. After one year of intensive study, you will be able to apply for a degree course at university.
This Access to Law course will provide you with a great insight into the English legal system, its personnel, and its components of the criminal and civil law. Whilst building your legal knowledge, you will also gain important skills such as IT, research, presentation and debating.
You will study specialist Law units including the English Legal System, Criminal Law, Tort and Contract Law.
Access to Higher Education courses are one-year intensive courses for adult students age 19+ who are intending to study for a degree at university but who do not have the required qualifications for entry, for example, BTECs or A-Levels at Level 3.
Tutorial sessions will help to facilitate your UCAS application for admission to the university.
What will I learn?
The full range of College facilities will be available to you for your research and assignment/examination preparation work.
You will have highly practical sessions, external speakers and visits to complement your class-based activity. You will also undertake relevant work experience so you are prepared for your future career in the legal sector.
You can also get involved in our Legal Clinic, run by students. Apply your skills in real life situations by providing free legal guidance regarding housing, benefits, immigration & family whilst being managed by qualified legal professionals.
You will develop your skills through practical assessments and training in the legal profession. You will also get a chance to participate in mooting (professional discussions) at the Royal Courts of Justice.
What can I do after this course?
You could move on to study Law at a university to qualify as a paralegal, a solicitor or a barrister.
You may wish to follow other legal careers such as legal secretary or working with the Citizens' Advice Bureau.
Entry requirements
You must have at least one GCSE grade A* - C in Maths or English. If you don't have these qualifications, you can study for these Level 2 qualifications at Barking & Dagenham College alongside your Access course.
