Introduction
The Associate of Science Degree in Chemistry covers the first two years of a four-year curriculum leading to a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. Students learn to apply math and chemistry concepts in the laboratory and develop critical thinking skills to solve different problems, including unit conversion and dimensional analysis. Upon completion of this program, students can define the fundamental properties of matter; determine the basic nuclear/electronic structures of atoms; identify trends in chemical/physical elemental properties; write chemical formulas and balance equations; utilize gas laws and the basics of the Kinetic Molecular Theory to solve gas problems; and understand concepts such as stereochemistry, structure and reactivity, reaction mechanisms, functional groups, synthesis of simple molecules, and the use of spectroscopic data to determine the structure of organic molecules.
