Urban Management Tools for Climate Change
IHS is proud to announce that this course is jointly developed with UN-HABITAT.
Cities are increasingly expected to undertake concrete actions to mitigate climate change and adapt the city to rising water levels, drought and other natural disasters related to the heating of the earth. What concrete activities should a city undertake and what works? This course offers management tools for urban policymakers, planners and environmentalists.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to prepare local climate change plans, which address the global challenges yet focus on concrete local actions. The course will offer specific practices to manage the urban design and environmental infrastructure, in particular, energy, transport, housing and water....

5 months, full time in teams
The objective is to develop concrete projects aimed at the transformation of urban spaces, the retrofit of existing buildings and the recovery of unused.
To date, 3.5 billion people, approximately half of the global population, live in cities: this urban population concentrated on 2% of the Earth’s surface, releases into the atmosphere 70% of global CO2 emissions causing an enormous impact on the environment. According to demographic projections by the United Nations, by 2030 the world population will increase by 1.5 billion, or about 100 million more people per year. This implies tremendous expansion, mainly in urban centers. Based on these data, cities are facing a period of great social, economic and environmental transformation, which is the subject of the course. The economic and production crisis, environmental challenges, new migration, and social integration, recuperating abandoned buildings to combat further land consumption, all require a new approach, to be contemplated and shared among the citizens rather than imposed from above....

The Building and Public Works program, specializing in Architectural Techniques and leading to an Attestation d’Études Collégiales (AEC), is based on two fundamental subjects; construction which involves; building science, knowledge of materials and proper procedures required to achieve every element of a building, and drafting which constitutes the instrument by which the Architect or the Civil Engineer expresses his ideas to the client as well as to the contractor who must execute the work. In addition, the student is introduced to proper graphics language for each: the client and the contractor.Advantages and benefits of the programThe training is purely technical. Its focus is on learning computer assisted drafting and cutting edge building technology, allowing for immediate entry into the workforce; The size of the classrooms is kept to a minimum (10 to 12 students per class). This allows us to ensure that individual attention be given to each student, to follow respective learning procedures emphasizing the importance of communication and autonomy as a result; After having completed just sixteen (16) months of training (four consecutive sessions) students are ready to enter into the workforce;...

This course delivers the skillset in linear or structural modeling that is required to solve structural problems from which you can develop finite element (FE) models for practical applications. It also teaches how results can be correctly interpreted. The course uses an open source FE package in a series of weekly practical sessions where models are constructed for sample problems and results are validated against simplified analytical models or open literature.
The majority of professionals in many branches of mechanical engineering will benefit from adding FEM to their skills array. The ability to develop modeling skills under supervision in a non-critical environment means that skills and techniques can be acquired in a logical, progressive manner....
