Programme Description

From Donald Trump to Brexit to Jair Bolsonaro to Matteo Salvini to Narendra Modi to Viktor Orbán, right-wing populism seems to be advancing relentlessly around the world. Meanwhile, already-existing authoritarian leaders like Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin are tightening their grip. Protest movements have emerged in Brazil, France, India and elsewhere, from left and right, united by their loss of faith in conventional (‘neoliberal’) democracy.

Have the things we have been taught to take for granted failed? Will all societies eventually become liberal democracies, are wars, domestic strife and authoritarian governments really things of the past, will capitalism endure indefinitely and is globalisation unstoppable? Why are so many societies buckling under pressure? What role do inequality, exploitation and environmental devastation play in this malaise? Why does immigration feature so prominently in populist campaigns? Why are so many young people cynical about democracy? What role does social media play in these social conflicts? Could conventional wars become a regular feature in the international system? What utopias move the world today? And – if democracies falter, what will replace them?... [-]

Overview

The EU Summer Program gives you the opportunity to intensively study the past, present, and future challenges of European integration. The program begins in the heart of Europe—Freiburg, Germany—where you’ll start a specialized curriculum that will take you on a 16-day experiential journey through Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greece and Cyprus.

In Bosnia-Herzegovina, you will travel to Sarajevo, called the “Jerusalem of Europe” because of its once historic mix of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. After Sarajevo, you’ll have a two-day trip to Republika Srpska that includes a visit to the memorial site for victims of Srebrenica, and an overnight stay in Višegrad, immortalized in Ivo Andrié’s Nobel Prize-winning classic Bridge on the Drina.... Overview

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, many of the countries of Central Europe quickly moved to detach themselves from the Russian sphere of influence and joined western institutions including NATO and the EU. The west saw this as the fulfillment of the right of self-determination; Russia tended to view it as a threatening move reminiscent of “encirclement.”

This course will examine the complex historical roots of the conflicting stance between NATO and the EU on one hand, and Russia on the other, and show how this is influencing events in Ukraine and beyond. We will discuss the importance of intelligence in the murky world of hybrid war. We will discuss how energy and non-energy natural resources play roles in security policy. We will also look at the role that traditional and new media are playing in state security and what states need to do to bolster cybersecurity within their borders.... [-]
