Introduction
Extending far back in time and across so many fields of study, the classics majors and minors promise an intellectual perspective that will inform and enrich the whole of your life's learning at Davidson and beyond.
The department offers two majors, one in classical languages and literature and the other in classical studies. The first focuses on ancient Greek and Latin; the second takes a broad, interdisciplinary approach to Greek and Roman studies.
The department also offers three minors, one in Greek, one in Latin, and one in classical studies.
As the quintessential liberal arts major, classics prepare students for fulfilling lives and successful careers in a wide range of jobs in the public and private sectors. We focus on preparing students to read carefully, think critically, and express their ideas in whatever professional roles they find themselves. Recent graduates have worked in accounting, banking, consulting, law, medicine, and the ministry. Several are high school Latin teachers; one is an assistant college football coach.
The Classics Department prepares you for graduate-level study through rigorous coursework and research opportunities. Our faculty members provide individual guidance to students pursuing graduate study and engage in a candid conversation about job prospects within academia.
