Introduction

Brief history

NOVA University Lisbon was founded on the 11th of August 1973, and is the youngest of Lisbon’s three state Universities. Integrated within a framework of expansion and diversification of higher education, the University adopted a new model within the Portuguese system that stressed interdisciplinary approaches, technological developments while, at the same time, safeguarding offerings in traditional academic domains including medicine, sciences and humanities.

Internationalization Of Nova

NOVA’s international profile has developed naturally over the years and, more rapidly, in the last 14 years, with the emergence of several international mobility programs, to which NOVA has been successfully applying by itself or through partnerships with Portuguese or foreign Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

As a young University, NOVA has been leading ranking positions, especially in Europe, while young innovative University in several areas such as Finance, Economics, Business, Data Science, amongst others. This fact has been contributing to increase NOVA’s brand all over the world, which is strategically positioned in Africa, South America, Middle East and Southeast Asia. NOVA has over 20% of international students represented by more than 100 different nationalities. This multicultural feature makes NOVA the most international Portuguese University ever.

Similarly, NOVA is since from its very beginning highly focused on knowledge and research and the fact that much of this research is being conducted in an international collaborative framework (e.g: under the European Framework Programs, Horizon 2020, and others) contributes to a sustained international profile of NOVA in terms of research.

Many study programs offered by the University are characterized by an international component that allows those who attend them to experience the culture, to know the level of development and to learn the best practices of other regions and countries.

In the years to come, NOVA will continue to develop this international profile, in all its aspects, which is an integral part of its mission and commitment to excellence in teaching and research.

Campus Features

Life At Nova

NOVA University Lisbon is the university of the Lisbon metropolitan area with its teaching and research schools and institutes in the centre of Lisbon, Almada, Oeiras and Cascais.

All campi are served by a good public transport network and are therefore very accessible. Within the campi, pedestrian access is facilitated and prioritised.

  • Accommodation

NOVA has three residence halls with a total of 460 beds for the university students, with priority given to Portuguese scholarship students and foreign students in exchange programs.

  • Libraries

NOVA University Lisbon has several libraries, included in its schools, which are specialized in a wide variety of thematic fields, covering all areas of knowledge.

The mission of NOVA libraries is to support teaching and research carried out by professors, students and researchers. Together they offer a collection of over 307,000 printed books, 6,388 printed journal titles, over 18,000 e-journal titles, theses and dissertations, 26,300 ebooks and access to bibliographical, statistical and financial databases relevant for all of the major scientific areas.

  • Sports

At NOVA, students have the opportunity of practicing competitive sports, participating in university competitions of sports such as surf, korfball, tennis, padel, target archery, basketball and athletics.

Our students got excellent results in several university competitions, being the national champions of surf and breaking university records in sports as athletics and swimming (season 2016/2017).

At NOVA you will have the possibility of practicing other sporting activities to fight stress through Yoga or doing thematic walks in Lisbon.

  • Student Life

Students’ associations represent the students of each school of NOVA University and are an essential part of the university life, actively promoting activities that vary from pedagogic and cultural events, sports practice and the provision of services to students.

The NOVA University Lisbon is the only Portuguese university that includes in its University Bodies a Student Council.

Students can also get involved in many clubs that exist at several NOVA schools.

    NOVA University Lisbon ranks in the TOP 8 of Young European Universities in all the major international rankings of Higher Education.

    These results acknowledge the efforts developed by NOVA as an institution with internationally competitive research and teaching excellence, able to ensure high levels of professional success to its students.

    NOVA was ranked in the top 8 in Europe in the QS TOP 50 under 50, among universities founded less than 50 years ago.

    NOVA ranks again in the top 8 in the five areas of knowledge evaluated by QS by subject:

    TheTimes Higher Education Ranking By Subject 2021, ranks NOVA  first national position in Business and Economics and Arts and Humanities and Top 10 among young European universities founded less than 50 years ago in Business and Economics, Clinical and Health, and Education.

    NOVA University Lisbon achieved the highest score of A (Very Good) in 13 indicators of the global U-Multirank 2020, and is thus ranked 8th among young European universities.

    Leveraged in the 5 Palmes prestige of Nova SBE (only 39 European institutions hold this distinction among the worldwide top 100 Business Schools), 5 Schools from NOVA University have ranked programs, being clearly the best Portuguese University. From the 24 listed areas:

    • 14 from NOVA School of Business and Economics;
    • 6 from NOVA Information Management School;
    • 1 partnership between NOVA Information Management School/ NOVA Law School;
    • 1 from NOVA Law School;
    • 1 from NOVA School of Science and Technology;
    • 1 from NOVA School of Public Health.
